Astrid “Sandy” Hanson Thaiheimer was born on New Year’s Day in Springfield, MA in 1931. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and attended Boston University, where she studied in the graduate School of Psychology and later received instruction in music conducting. She was involved with the Handel & Haydn Society, The Masterworks Chorale, and the Master Singers.

In 1963, she founded The A Cappella Singers women’s choral group in MetroWest Boston, where she built the group up to more than fifty women at one point, and performed countless concerts.
